While we live in comfortable flats in the cities, there are tribes in India who choose to live away from the city lights. We might think highly of ourselves but you will be amazed to see how these tribes are rooted in their customs and traditions. Some of them are even much more progressive than us.
Tribal people in India are called adivasi. Adivasi is an umbrella term for a heterogeneous set of ethnic and tribal groups considered the aboriginal population of India. adivasi carries the specific meaning of being the original and autochthonous inhabitants of a given region and was specifically coined for that purpose in the 1930s.
Tribal people’s living cultures are different. Their dressing sense, food style, living style, language and behavior all are different from us. Living in the North Sentinel Island of Andaman is known to be one of the most private and isolated tribes in the world. They do not like to be in contact with the modern world. They have even attacked the people who tried to enter their territory.
Tribal population in India covers approximately 15% of the country and the majority is found in central India.Their livelihood is mainly dependent on agriculture and handicrafts but the tribes of India still display a wide spectrum of “another India” you hardly know about.Gond tribes, Bhils tribes,Santhal tribes , Khasi tribes, Garo tribe, Angami tribes, Munda tribes, Chenchu tribes, Toto tribes, Warli tribes etc. are the various types of tribes living in the region of India.
The state with more Scheduled Tribes comprises 83.2 percent of its population of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Karnataka. There are 461 tribal groups in India out of which 424 are considered as the Schedule Tribes.
