This year, India is celebrating its 74th Independence Day, commemorating nation’s independence from British Rule (The United Kingdom) on 15 August 1947. It is an annual celebration and a national holiday in India.
It is also the same day when the British (United Kingdom) Parliament passed the Independence Act 1947, which transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly came into effect.
India attained independence following the Independence Movement noted for largely nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience.
On 15 August 1947, the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian National Flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi, and India’s new journey started as an independent nation.
Every year on Independence Day, the incumbent Prime Minister customarily raises the flag and addresses the nation. Doordarshan broadcasts the entire event, which is India’s national broadcaster, and usually begins with the shehnai music of Ustad Bismillah Khan.
India celebrates Independence Day with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades and cultural activities. Kite flying is also an event associated with Independence Day. People symbolise their patriotism for the country by using the flag in different sizes, and they also decorate their homes and belongings with the colours of the national flag.We can celebrate this Independence Day while staying at our homes, watching the military performances on our television.

Large gatherings at places to celebrate the events have limited, even at the Red Fort where the flag is hoisting happens every Independence Day. In the sake of the precautions taken, there will be no grand performances with the military band either. The Defence Ministry recently stated that due to widespread Covid-19 pandemic, the military-bands are preparing their shows in advance. These are likely to be telecast on Independence Day instead of a live performance.
